Forklift Tank Safety
Amongst the most common types of forklifts available on the market these days is a propane-powered forklift. The propane utilized to fuel these equipment has several properties which should be taken into consideration when working with the fuel tank. For instance, it is really important that all Personal Protective Equipment or PPE is worn each time a driver is on the machine and in a lot of places, on the jobsite.
PPE
Propane gas is fairly cold and can cause serious burns to the skin if exposed, no matter how minor the exposure. Therefore, it is required that whenever you are completing a re-fueling process or exchanging the propane tank a complete face shield or safety goggles and thick gloves must be worn for protection. Many workplaces require steel-toe boots to be worn also when carrying heavy objects is part of your task. Every workplace has various regulations set in place which pertain to the specific requirements of the company. The supervisor would inform you of what PPE things must be worn before your shift begins.
No Smoking
In the refueling zone, there can be no open flames or any type of smoking going on due to the high flammability factor. Propane gas is extremely ignitable and it is imperative that it is never exposed to any type of ignition source or a very dangerous exploding situation would unfold.
Inspect the Valve
Make sure that the valve on the new tank is turned off before connecting the fuel line when exchanging the fuel tank. If you inadvertently insert the fuel line into an open valve, propane gas would be released. Overlooking this factor could potentially create a very catastrophic situation.
Fire Extinguisher
A fire extinguisher must be made available, when the tank is being changed out during the refueling process. The majority of companies require that a fire extinguisher be mounted on each forklift. This is an essential safety rule which should be made a priority in the workplace.
Secure the Tank
The majority of propane tanks would use a restraining device such as a strap or bracket to keep the tank stable. Be certain that this security feature is functioning properly because it is being used for the important task to prevent the tank from falling or shifting. A faulty restraining condition can lead to the tank coming loose and falling or rolling around dangerous.
